Zioxla
Zioxla is a creative agency
and independent publishing house.
It published its first title, Strange Plants, in 2014. The book featured the work of 25 artists—from oozing paintings of rotting cacti to eerie, mesmeric photos of the leafy kudzu vine—and discussed the role plants play in the artists’ personal lives. Strange Plants was featured on The New York Times T Magazine, It’s Nice That, Nowness, 032c and Sight Unseen, among others, and was available in stores such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Tenoversix, Colette, Restored and Marc Jacobs’ Bookmarc. The first edition sold out in less than one month.
In 2015, Zioxla released Strange Plants II. The book featured 30 artists—such as Allison Schulnik, Ren Hang, Misha Hollenbach, Francesca DiMattio, Friedrich Kunath, Rosson Crow and Eric Yahnker—and included viscous paintings of drooping flower arrangements; intuitive photographs of lily pads and lithe bodies; and mixed-media collages that juxtaposed the tranquility of Japanese Ikebana with the chaotic energy of vandalism. Strange Plants II was featured on AnOther, Oyster, Dazed and i-D, among others, and was available in stores such as the Hammer Museum, Space 15 Twenty, Need Supply, Wood Wood, Do You Read Me, Bjork, Perks & Mini and Your Mind.
That same year, Strange Plants was awarded the gold prize for best editorial project by the Art Directors Club of Europe, and won the gold trophy at the Laus Graphic Design and Visual Communications Awards. For winning the top prize at the Laus Awards, Strange Plants became a part of the endowment of the Barcelona Design Museum.
In 2017, Zioxla published Cats & Plants, the debut book from Chicago-based artist Stephen Eichhorn, which quickly sold out. The 152-page book included more than 200 rich color images of the artist’s curious cat collages, and featured Calicos and cactuses, Siamese and succulents, and so much more. New York magazine called it one of the “best coffee-table books” of the year, and it was featured by The Guardian, Domino, Apartment Therapy, Puss Puss and Twin, among many others. It was available at select stores such as Artbook @ MoMA PS1, the Walker Art Center, Frye Museum Store and One of a Few.
Zioxla released Strange Plants III in 2018. The book featured the work of 50 artists—such as Synchrodogs, Chloe Wise, Marilyn Mugot, Sojourner Truth Parsons, Holly Coulis, Robin F. Williams, Julie Curtiss and Brittany Asch—and included large-scale paintings of overgrown cactus gardens; filmic and otherworldly photos of water lilies; and glitchy textiles of roses sourced from social media. Strange Plants III was featured by Wallpaper, i-D, ignant, Sight Unseen, Office and P Magazine, among others, and is available at select locations such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern, Fondation Louis Vuitton and Gucci Garden.
